Catholic Lobby Celebrates President Biden Signing Inflation Reduction Act Into Law
Mary J. Novak: “Today, we celebrate that our nation’s laws have moved closer to embodying the principles of NETWORK’s Build Anew justice agenda.”
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, President Biden signed the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 into law. Over the past year and a half, the Catholic Sisters and advocates of NETWORK Lobby for Catholic Social Justice advocated tirelessly, contacting their Members of Congress more than 6,000 times in support of federal policies that make our tax system more just and prioritize workers and families in our federal politics. NETWORK-supported policies in this law include instituting a corporate minimum tax, providing enhanced funding for IRS enforcement, and extending the ACA premium tax credits.
Public support for these policies is also robust. A collection of polls show voters strongly support the new law, including a recent poll showing that almost two-thirds (64%) of respondents backed the 15% minimum corporate tax.
Joan F. Neal, Deputy Executive Director and Chief Equity Officer, NETWORK Lobby for Catholic Social Justice, said:
“This law offers a new vision for our country, one that ends decades of divestment by making a groundbreaking commitment to our country’s children and families. It dismantles systemic racism, prioritizes equity, and seeks to build a just and inclusive community where everyone can flourish.
“By supporting the dignity of every person, family, and community and investing in their future, we will build our country anew and protect our democracy.”
Mary J. Novak, Executive Director, NETWORK Lobby for Catholic Social Justice, said:
“Catholic social teaching teaches that politics at all levels must promote human dignity and advance the common good. Today, we celebrate that our nation’s laws have moved closer to embodying the principles of NETWORK’s Build Anew justice agenda.
“Through their dedication, President Joe Biden and Congressional Democrats have passed a law that will make peoples’ lives better by addressing healthcare costs and the crisis of climate change and repairing some of the most egregious injustices in our tax system.”
